I once set my kitchen on fire while making arguably the easiest meal out there. It was my second year of college and my first time having my own kitchen. I was left to my own devices, ready to take on the challenge of cooking for myself. I set out to make myself breakfast, a simple egg on toast. I flicked on the stove top, cracked the egg into the pan, and popped my slice of bread into the toaster oven. There’s no way I could make a mistake here… right? Wrong! Cut to five minutes later, the toaster oven was on fire, I was balling my eyes out and trying, like a madwoman, to put out the flames.
Now one year from that fateful day, I am proud to say I have become a mediocre cook. I may not be Gordon Ramsey material (I would never survive Hell’s Kitchen) but I no longer set fires over toast.
Last year I was faced with the simple challenge; learn to cook or starve. So I took to the web to learn a few things; some cheap, easy, and mostly healthy recipes that could get me through the year. There is a lot I still have to learn about cooking but I enjoy it now and I am excited for whatever lays ahead.
